THE LIGHT ON FLOWERPOT ISLAND
Flowerpot Island lies within the boundaries of Fathom Five National Marine Park. Twenty-one shipwrecks litter the park's lake bottom. One of them was the Marion L Breck. With a load of bricks bound for Blind River, this 3-masted schooner foundered on the rocks of nearby Bear's Rump Island on October 16, 1900. Two day later, dan Smith, Flowerpot Island's first keeper, rescued her crew.
In 1969, the lighthouse, which had been replace by a steel skeleton tower, was set on fire, pushed over the bluff and into the water. Concerned about the deterioration of the remaining buildings, since 1996 volunteers from the Friends of Fathom Five have restored and maintained the Flowerpot Island Light station. Today, the Friends offer tours of the century-old light keeper's house and a light station host program.
