THE LIGHTHOUSE AT CAPE CROKER (NEYAASHIINIZAAMIING)

A new lighthouse tower was completed in 1909. The light has a visibility of up to 20 kilometers. It was the first lighthouse on Georgian Bay to be built of reinforced concrete and the first light station in Canada to have both the fog plant and the lighthouse powered by electricity. Cape Croker is one of only three lighthouses on Georgian Bay that still have their original Fresnel lenses.

The road into the Cape Croker lighthouse passes through the Chippewa's of Nawash First Nation community, established in 1857 after the Ojibway surrendered land near Owen Sound. The road was hand-built over a period of two years following the Second World Was by light keeper Norman Whetton.

Frederic Jerome Proulx was the last light keeper before the station was automated in 1986.
